About Us

Wivenhoe Funny Farm was the brain child of Hazel Humphreys, who helped to set up and run Essex University's comedy club from 2003 to 2005.

In 2005, as she graduated, she was no longer eligible to run a student club, so she approached Wivenhoe Town Football Club, got comic Tony Cowards on board with his technical know-how and the rest is history.

Acts and audience loved the atmosphere at the delapidated club house ("shed in a field") and we managed to attract excellent comedians such as Jo Caulfield, Sarah Millican, Shazia Mirza, Richard Herring and Robin Ince.

The Funny Farm has run regular successful gigs in Colchester at The Bull and at Wivenhoe's Greyhound pub. Nights were also set up at Stanway Rovers FC and The Grapes in Colchester.

In 2009 sadly due to Wivenhoe Town FC's various difficulties the Funny Farm could no longer use their venue.

However recently we have started running regular nights at the last Thursday of the month (and whatever makes most sense in December) in the lovely wooden-walled comfort of WIvenhoe Town Cricket Club's very friendly pavilllion ("It's a posher shed in a posher field!" - Steve Day, headliner). And we still get great acts including Simon Munnery, John Gordillo, Nick Revell and Russell Kane.

Having relied on the extraordinary skills of her regular MC Tony Cowards for five years, Hazel's now taken to compering the gigs herself. Because she's cheap.
